Flag Football Strategies – Offense

This article will cover flag football strategies. I am going to assume you are coaching or playing 7-on-7 flag football.

Offense in flag consists of a couple of key things, first misdirection. Misdirection is key for running an efficient offense. Reverses, halfback passes, and having your offensive lineman pass are some very effective trick plays. Those plays are a good place to start from. You can add your unique touches on these plays. Try to run a trick play once every 12-15 plays.

Next, remember to use your offensive lineman for catching passes. Most teams just use their offensive linemen to block. Using your offensive lineman to only block will limit your offense. For example, when starting a game, start the game by passing to your offensive lineman. As the defensive begins to key on your offensive lineman, your wide receivers will begin to get open for the deep passes.

Speed is key in flag football, especially for offensives. Every position should have a player who has speed, even your offensive lineman. A slow offensively player does more damage to your offense and will also slow your offense down. There may be some situations where you may want a big slow lineman in the game but these situations should come rarely. With fast players on the field the defense will not be able to key out your top offensive performers. Speed, speed, and more speed mixed with misdirection plays will help you score a ton of points.

Somethings you should practice with your offensive units are breaking towards the sidelines after a catch, catching the ball at the highest point, and blocking. Teach your players to break towards the sidelines. There are two reasons for this: First the sidelines cut off the numbers of flags the defenders can pull and second, it makes it tough for the defenders to get a good angle to pull the flags that are available. Catching the ball at the highest point teaches your players to be aggressive and to go up and get the ball. A simple drill to use is to have a head to head competition between two players. Toss the ball and allow the players to fight for it. The loser runs a lap and if they both drop the ball then they both run a lap. Blocking is key and the blocks do not have to be quality blocks. Pretty much your players just have to put a body on someone. One key block can lead to a big play for your offense. These are basic

As a coach, you have to figure out what kind of flag football play is going to be the best for your team. Sometimes it is better to execute small plays that will pile up and pay off. Short yardage plays are very useful because they are fast and they are high percentage pass plays. The quarterback should be able to complete the majority of the passes; there are always exceptions but they are executable for the most part. The downfall is that most of the yardage gained will be ten yards or less. However, the small amount of yards can grow if your team is able to avoid the tacklers.

The blocking techniques are very important in these short-yardage flag football plays. A key part of the short yardage pass plays is the view that the quarterback has. The better the view of the QB, the better the play will go. You should tell the defenders of the quarterback to aim to knock the other team’s feet out from under them. The more guys that are down, the wider the range that the QB can see. Another method that is good for short passing plays is when your team fakes poor pass protection. With that, you will cause the other team to go very deep. Then, when the ball is thrown out to the back, the defense will be too far in the field to catch your receiver.

During these types of flag football plays, timing is everything. You need to make sure that your QB knows where the receiver is at all times. Without timing and correct perception, the QB will never be able to successfully get the ball to the correct receiver. If you want to execute a screen play then you should have your QB keep dropping back until he is about to get tackled; it is then and only then that he should release the ball to the receiver.

Short yardage flag football plays often consist of five yard in and out routes. The receiver should be directed to return to the QB and he should always be expecting the ball. Like the quarterback, timing is very crucial for the receiver. As soon as they make the first break in their pattern, the receiver should be adjusted to catch the ball. He should be paying attention to the actions and directions of the QB as well.

These plays are quick and they help your team little by little. While they don’t get as many yards as some other plays, short yardage plays are a lot less risky. Therefore, you have a better chance of succeeding and at least gaining some yardage rather than starting from the beginning every time. You need to make sure that these plays are perfected and that your team can execute them with any necessary adjustment to the opposing team.

A playbook is something essential for a flag football team because it comprises of descriptions and diagrams of the plays that the players have practiced. It is their winning guide, their recipe for winning. It contains the plays that they are most familiar with, the drills that they have perfected; the strategies that could make them exceptional. As the coach, you know the uniqueness of each of your players. You have seen their strengths} and weaknesses. You know who the standouts are. Develop the playbook with this in mind. Decide where to setup players and then how to have the game rolling. As you develop your own team’s playbook, think about the following tips:

Keep it easy.

A playbook should be clear and easily understood by everyone. If the players get baffled instead of empowered, the playbook defeats its meaning. You may begin with a drawing of 3 pass routes for your receivers: one short route, a mid route and a long route.

Keep the passing and running balanced.

Even though flag football is more of a passing game, running the ball is equally important to keep the opponents perplexed. To do this, you may draw about 2 plays to each side of the field, keeping one draw play in your playbook for aggressive pass rushers. The greatest teams have these to win tough games.

Maintain a progression of targets & keep lines open.

For pass plays, there should be at least 3 targets: the primary, the secondary and the bail out – the person a player goes to when no one is openand when he desires to get away from the sack. Develop complimentary receiver routes along with your pass plays so that if the right outside receiver runs a deep inside route, a secondary right side receiver can run a mid outside route. Place a bold reminder for your receivers to come back to the quarterback if in trouble.

Create a working audible system.

It is possible to find your team in trouble even though you thought you called the right play. Therefore, always preparea play or two to jumpto. It’s not enough to match an audible with a code name. There must be a system. Avoid being easy to figure out. Try making a series of calls in which a specific word position designates the play. Be creative. Allow every player to be familiar with the system.

Don’t forget your defense.

Match your plays with a strong defense. The goal is to beat the passing and running speeds of your opponents. A cover 2 is a basic defense to run that most of the time works. In this defense, the cornerbacks and linebackers cover receivers man to man, while the safeties divide the deep field in 2. If a receiver enters their 2 of the field, the safety rescues.

These are the basics to developing your own playbook. Don’t reject other resources, such as the Internet, where a great number of playbooks are also attainable. These can permit you variety in your plays and a handful of ideas.

Still, the most important thing is that every member of your team accepts the plays. It is in this way that the playbook will work for you and that every player can pull off the play well.

Coach Miles has been advising flag football teams for over 15 years. He has developed several flag football plays over the years that have made it into top-selling flag football playbooks.
